"Sea Area Forecast" is an exhibition of seascape paintings by Rod Coyne. In style and theme the work is a continuation of the artist's successful show at the Royal Hibernian Academy's Ashford Gallery, April 2003, when esteemed art critic Aidan Dunne wrote, "Rod Coyne's boldly designed decisive studies of the sea around Dublin are atmospherically good". Rod considers his art practice to be academic. However the German art critic Jurgen Raap suggested that Rod also had "a tendency towards abstraction and form reduction". In this show the artist allows some seascapes to dissolve before your very eyes.

It is easy to see the influences of Turner, Whistler, Monet, and in turn his own namesake Roderic O'Conor in many of Rod's paintings. Coyne works from life, therefore these seascapes reflect the experience of the physicality of weather conditions, featuring bold, decisive brushstrokes. The artist relishes facing the challenge of the elements and translating his vision into successful artworks. His recent sojourn at the remote Cill Rialaig Artists Retreat on Bolus Head, S. W. Kerry has yielded up works, which spring from March sun and showers to fierce gale force winds and storms.
